In Greek mythology Arethousa is a nymph of sources and forests. A companion of the goddess Artemis and daughter of Nereus and Doris.
To avoid the river god Alpheus , which was in love with her, Arethousa had crossed the sea between Peloponnese and Sicilia. While reaching the island of Ortigia Syracuse, Artemis transformed Arethousa in rich gurgling water.
Then Alpheus transformed into powerful undersea river, the vehemence of which could not be prevented nor Adrias (Adriatic Sea), to unite its waters with those of Arethusa source.
